30 reasons to kill smoking before it kills you

By now hopefully everyone knows that smoking is one of the most detrimental habits to our health. Here are 30 reasons to STOP it now before it's too late...
  1.  Think of all the people who love and care for you. How’s your smoking habit affecting your relationship with them in the past, present, and future? How is it affecting your relationship with yourself?
  2. Cancer and tobacco are best friends. Other members of the ‘gang’ are various heart diseases and respiratory problems. 
  3. You risk of chronic obstructive lung (pulmonary)disease increases greatly when you smoke.
  4. Research now confirms that smoking is likely to lead to AMD (age-related macular degeneration). This degenerative condition may result in blindness and occurs at the back of the eye.
  5. The risk of developing cataracts is much higher in smokers.
  6. Smoking makes you prone to developing complications in diverticular disease.
  7. The body's immune function is suppressed by smoking.
  8. Smoking may lead to chronic sinusitis.
  9. When you smoke or chew tobacco you increase the chances of developing or worsen gum disease.
  10. Tobacco often causes flare-ups of hemorrhoids.
  11. It is 13 times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis if you smoke over 20 cigarettes a day compared to non-smokers.
  12. A child’s risk of developing autism goes up in women that smoke during pregnancy.
  13. Smoking along with coffee, fizzy drinks, and alcohol consumption disturbs the secretion of the female hormone estrogen. This is an important hormone for healthy bone development.
  14. Studies suggest that nicotine is just as addictive as cocaine or heroin.
  15. Cigars are at least as harmful as cigarettes as they also contain nicotine. Cigars contain over 4000 chemicals, 200 of which poisons and 63 cancer causing.
  16. Even if you don’t inhale, smoke and its harmful substances go into the body through the skin, nose, and mouth.
  17. Ask yourself – What is there to gain? Why do I have to live with all these health risks?
  18. Your skin ages faster when you smoke. So, you’ll look older than your age.
  19. Smoking can irritate the stomach lining by increasing acidity.
  20. You are forcing people around you to breathe in poisons while you ‘enjoy’ your fag.
  21. The risk for chronic ear infections is much higher in children exposed to secondhand smoke.
  22. Persistent exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) increases the likelihood of cancers in later life. This was confirmed by researchers from The Cancer Center of the University of Minnesota who detected cancer-causing compounds in the urine of babies chronically exposed to ETS.
  23. The British Institute of Psychiatry reports that smoking is likely to lead to mental decline later in life. Compared to non-smokers, smokers are 4 times more likely to experience a significant intellectual decline. Similar testing was used to the ones screening for dementia and Alzheimer's.
  24. The senses of smell and taste deteriorate due to the constant exposure to smoke.
  25. Smoking kills your wallet too. According to the NHS, on average people save £250 a month when they quit smoking. This comes to £3,000 a year! This is more than what most people spend on food, holidays, transport or clothing for a year.
  26. Every additional cigarette you smoke shortens your projected lifespan. When is NOW a good time to quit?
  27. Consider your own wellbeing deeply. Is there anything you value more? Are you willing to sacrifice it for smoking?
  28. Give yourself and the people around you the meaningful and precious gift of letting go of
  29. Be a role model for young and old around you. Inspire others that want to quit.
  30. Don’t be discouraged if you have failed in the past. Perhaps that time was not right, perhaps you lacked motivation. This time you are determined and you know better. Just do it. You’d be proud of your own success.
