What causes dis-ease?

Before reading any further, please do the following exercise:

1) Scan your body and mind for any signs of dis-ease. It may be a physical pain or ailment or something disturbing your peace of mind.
2) Try to identify the cause. Is it something that someone did to you, or bad genes, or stress, or toxins ...?

It is tempting to look outside ourselves to find the cause of a problem or a disease. In reality ...

External events and circumstances have little influence over our well-being.
Consider the fact that there are people who are allergic to otherwise perfect health foods such as fruit. Or that the end of a relationship can be a delightful release for one of the ex-partners and heartbreak for the other.

In reality, the major causes of most dis-ease lie within us. Here is a brief list of causes, in order of importance:
  • Mistaken self-identification. This is by far the greatest influence on our well-being. Narrow and rigid self-image contributes to dis-ease, expansive and fluid one equates with health.
The more identified we are with an aspect of our persona, the more invested we are in protecting it. Any perceived threat to this 'image', then, leads to stress. Stress is compromising our immune system and we become prone to illness.

In the absence of a self-identification to defend, one perceives nothing as threatening.

If you no longer identify yourself with a physical body what can scare you? If you don't equate yourself with your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, what can disturb you? Realising one's True Self as being beyond anything perceivable or conceivable brings complete healing.

Total transcendence is not essential for this principle to hold. You can find examples in your own social circle of this. People who don't take themselves too seriously tend to be in good health. Compassionate people, equating their welfare with that of others tend to enjoy radiant well-being.
  • Negative mind habits. Emotions such as anxiety, anger, hatred, shame, envy harm us by weakening our immune system. Thoughts of fear, or of doing harm to oneself or others are actively destroying our well-being.
I'm sure you know 'negative' people who seem to always be under the weather. Scientists have proven that negative emotions are a major cause of life-threatening conditions such as heart disease and cancer.

Conversely, medical history is abundant with examples of healing the body by embracing positive mind states. Recovery groups such as alcoholics anonymous and the like show how the body heals through spiritual evolution. Cancer recoveries through meditation or laughter testify to the same thing.
  • Self-destructive behaviours. These are usually just the concrete expressions of the 2 primary causes listed above.
Such behaviours include: taking harmful substances such as drugs, tobacco, and alcohol; ingesting foods that do not belong in a human body such as processed or cooked foods and animal products; abusing the body through over-exertion; not getting enough sleep.

With this brief overview, I invite you to realise that to find the real causes of dis-ease we need to look within. Not with a sense of guilt but with a sense of empowerment.

As long as we externalise the causes and conditions of our welfare to the outside world we remain a victim.

When we are honest with ourselves and take full responsibility for our health, we regain our power.

To heal is to make whole. Wholeness is a choice. Know yourself as you are, accept things as they are, take care of yourself and you will need no healing. You will BE whole.
